About Sarfraz Khan Virk

Sarfraz Khan Virk is currently Director of Federal Investigation Agency Lahore, Government of Pakistan. He was a senior superintendent of police in the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Punjab. He is a member of the civil service of Pakistan with more than 15 years of experience in public service, public safety, law enforcement, counter terrorism and crime investigations. In CTD, His main responsibilities include monitoring organizations prescribed by the United Nations Security Council Resolutions and the implementation of sanctions on them.

Sarfraz worked as a personal staff officer to the prime minister of Pakistan and participated in policy formulation at the top level. Later, he was the chief of police of four main cities of Pakistan, including Jhelum, Mianwali, Sheikhupura and Bahawalpur. Last year, he had the opportunity to work with Saint Paul Police Department in Minnesota and Pakistan Mission to the United Nations in New York during his Hubert Humphrey Fellowship in USA.

Apart from an undergraduate degree in law and a graduate degree in history from Pakistan, Sarfranz also has a master’s degree in human rights from the University College London as a Chevening scholar. Recently, he has obtained a master’s degree in international human rights law from the University of Oxford.

His research as an AsiaGlobal Fellow will explore the nexus between human trafficking, terrorism and terrorism-financing with particular reference to South Asia. There has been ever increasing importance to explore this nexus to control money laundering and terrorism financing, especially after Pakistan has been placed on the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force.
