Will Economic Disarray Challenge Xi’s Power?

In his New York Times (Chinese version) op-ed, Yoshikazu Kato, Adjunct Associate Professor of Asia Global Institute, explores whether President Xi Jingping’s power would be challenged due to the recent disarray in China’s economy.

According to Kato, there were criticisms of Xi within the PRC’s Communist Party that he had ignored market logic and experienced colleagues who were well versed in economic policies. This, however, should not be interpreted as ‘Xi’s diminishing power and the rise of Li’s status’. To consolidate his power and status, Xi and his trusted underlings will likely put more emphasis on market economy and internationalization in implementing future economic policies.
