In an analysis in The Hindu, Ananth Krishnan, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2019, says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pitched for his country to become “a guardian of the global commons”, particularly in an increasingly contested maritime domain. Asia Global Institute Adjunct Associate Professor Yoshikazu Kato also observed in Krishnan's analysis that Abe has improved Japan's relations with China diplomatically and economically.
