The landslide re-election victory for the Democratic Progressive Party’s Tsai Ing-wen in Taiwan earlier in January has presented Beijing with a second pressing challenge in its backyard. Ananth Krishnan, 2019 AsiaGlobal Fellow, says that the election results show that Taiwanese and Hongkongers favour two systems over ‘one country’, adding to Beijing’s ire.
