If China wants the EU as a partner, it must offer concrete cooperation

Sebastian Contin Trillo-Figueroa, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2022, analyzes in the South China Morning Post the critical need for China to offer concrete cooperation to the EU to avoid lasting estrangement.

He highlights that while Trump's return might pull Europe closer to China, this opportunity is limited. For years, China has sidestepped EU concerns regarding market access and trade imbalances. The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) met with obstacles, and Europe's "de-risking" efforts have missed fundamental issues. Figueroa emphasizes that China should no longer ignore EU trade complaints, as this reluctance undermines the relationship.
