Mher D Sahakyan, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2022, explores the intersection of China's Digital Silk Road and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in his recent research.
He argues that this framework offers mutual benefits: China gains a strategic foothold in Eurasian high-tech production, while EAEU members access crucial technologies for digitalization and economic growth. The research outlines the challenges and opportunities for technological cooperation between China and individual EAEU states (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia). The 2018 EAEU-China Agreement is highlighted as a key instrument for advancing digitalization and technological collaboration. Finally, he also notes that following the 2022 Ukrainian crisis, Chinese tech companies have largely captured EAEU high-tech markets, with the exception of Armenia.
