China and Africa, Rekindling the Fates of Global Power

Sebastian Contin Trillo-Figueroa, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2022, and Mohamed Ibrahim Hafez, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2023, co-authored an article analyzing China's growing influence in Africa.

The 2024 FOCAC summit demonstrated China's commitment through substantial investments and trade, contrasting with less tangible Western promises. Despite trade imbalances and debt concerns, China is now Africa's primary partner in trade, investment, and infrastructure. The West's struggling initiatives further enhance China's position. Egypt exemplifies this with increased Chinese investment and military cooperation. Amidst a renewed "America First" US policy, China's deepening African partnerships signal a shift in global power.
