Bigtechs and the Emergence of New Systemically Important Financial Institutions: Lessons from the Chinese Experience

Douglas Arner, AGI Senior Fellow, has recently coauthored a research paper, examines how China’s regulatory responses to the financial expansion of Bigtech firms can inform global strategies for managing the systemic risks and benefits associated with the platformization of finance. It highlights the need for adaptive regulatory frameworks, effective data-sharing mechanisms, and both activity-based and entity-based regulations to address the unique challenges posed by digitally interconnected financial businesses.
