Donald Trump’s revolutionary project is aimed at transforming both the US itself and the role of the US in the world. As such, it marks a break in world history, as the US transforms from benevolent global hegemon to predatory superpower. In the process, he is attempting to destroy both fundamental features of the US — rule of law, a competent state, commitment to science and freedom of the media — and of the world order it promoted — stable alliances, support for democracy and liberal trade. None of this was perfect. But the US — and the rest of the world — will regret it when it has gone.
