Simon Commander of Altura Partners discussed his book, The Connections World: The Future of Asian Capitalism, at the public policy seminar on April 20, which explored the relationship between politics and business in Asia.
The book highlighted the significance of networks in Asia's growth and how business groups filled gaps in incomplete markets, but as they grew, they accumulated power and wealth, making them highly influential. Simon cautioned that this increasing reliance on connections was problematic, stifling innovation and competition to maintain dominance while offering limited employment opportunities. He suggested taxation as a policy to curb their influence, citing its success in Japan and Korea.
