Covid-19 has placed significant stresses on people’s physical and mental health, revealing gaps in public-health delivery and the design deficiencies of cities. The pandemic required social distancing and self-isolation but often in crowded communities or urban areas with insufficient spaces for relaxation and leisure activities and without the necessary support services and safe transportation systems. As the coronavirus catastrophe and the economic crisis it caused recede, how can communities build back better and provide the facilities and amenities necessary to accommodate public-health needs and promote the wellbeing, including the mental health, of individuals and families? AsiaGlobal Fellows from the UK and India, who are both physicians and public-health experts, and an urban design specialist from Singapore will consider how to make cities healthier, safer, more productive and more pleasant places to live.
