About Matteo Giovannini (Italy)

Matteo Giovannini is a finance professional with extensive experience in private and state-owned enterprises, specializing in Asian markets and cross-border project financing. Based in China since 2013, he has developed a deep understanding of the region’s economic landscape. He currently serves as senior finance manager at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the world’s largest financial institution by total assets.

Before moving to China, Matteo worked for several years as a Financial Controller for Italian companies, managing operations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. From 2018 to 2019, he contributed to Italy’s economic diplomacy as head of the financial markets team for the China Task Force under the Italian Ministry of Economic Development.

Matteo is a Non-Resident Associate Fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, contributing to discussions on global trade, finance and policy, and serves as an advisory committee member of the Beijing Global Talent Exchange Association, supporting future leaders through the Global Young Leaders Dialogue Program.

Matteo holds an MBA from the National School of Development at Peking University, a master’s degree in multimedia management from IULM University in Milan, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Catholic University of Milan. His academic journey also includes a year as a Chinese scholar at Liaoning Normal University in Dalian.

As an AsiaGlobal Fellow, his research will delve into China’s bold vision of becoming a global financial powerhouse, exploring the pivotal role Hong Kong can play as a bridge between China and the world’s capital markets.
