Magdalena Łągiewska is an assistant professor and the director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Gdańsk. In addition, she is a research associate in the "China, Law and Development" project at the University of Oxford and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Her research interests include international law, arbitration in China, intellectual property rights protection and the legal dimensions of the Belt and Road Initiative. She gained practical exposure to international commercial arbitration during an internship at the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. She is proficient in several languages, including her native Polish, English, French, Chinese, and Spanish. Her book “Digitalization and the Use of New Technologies in International Arbitration” has been published by Brill in 2024.
Magdalena holds a master’s degree in international economic relations with a specialization in international finance and banking from University of Gdańsk. She also holds two PhD degrees, both in law from the University of Gdańsk and the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai. She achieved honors upon completing the Academy of Young Diplomats in Warsaw and gained valuable experience through internships at the Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Brussels and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Her research as an AsiaGlobal Fellow will explore the concept of “Leadership in Digital Dominance: From East to West”.
