Rakesh Mohan is President Emeritus and Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP), New Delhi, India, formerly Brookings India. Until recently he was the President. He is also a Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He is now a member of the Economic Advisory Panel to World Bank President Ajay Banga.
He is also Senior Advisor to the McKinsey Global Institute.
Rakesh Mohan was Senior Fellow in the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, Yale University 2010 -12 and 2016-20; and was earlier Professor in the Practice of International Economics and Finance at the School of Management at Yale University, 2010-12.
He was closely associated with the Indian economic reforms process from the late 1980s onwards. He was Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India 2002-2004 and 2005-2009; Secretary, Economic Affairs, 2004-2005, and Chief Economic Adviser of the Indian Ministry of Finance 2001-2002, and Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Industry, 1988-1996.
He was executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., 2012-15, representing India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan, and chairman, National Transport Development Policy Committee, Government of India, 2010-14, in the rank of a Minister of State.
He chaired the Expert Group on Railways (1999-2001); Expert Group on Commercialization of Infrastructure Projects (1994-96), the Expert Group on Petrochemicals (1992-93) and the Advisory Committee on National Accounts (1997-2000).
He co-chaired the "Committee on Financial Sector Assessment" (2009) set up by the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India. He also co-chaired the G20 Working Group "Enhancing Sound Regulation and Strengthening Transparency" (2009). He chaired the Working Group on "Capital Flows and Emerging Market Economies" (2009) set up by the Committee on Global Financial System (CGFS), Bank of International Settlements (BIS).
Dr Mohan holds a B.Sc., ACGI in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, University of London, a B.A. from Yale University, and an MA and Ph. D in Economics from Princeton University.
Mohan has authored three books on urban economics and urban development and two books on monetary policy: ‘Monetary Policy in a Globalized Economy: A Practitioner's View’ (2009), and “Growth with Financial Stability: Central Banking in an Emerging Market” (Oxford University Press, 2011), and three other edited books on the Indian Economy. His most recent edited book is “India Transformed: 25 Years of Economic Reforms” (Penguin Random House, 2017; Brookings Press 2018).
