AsiaGlobal Fellow 2024; Director, Innovation and Global R&D Initiatives, State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, Turkey Office
Magsud Mammadov is the director of innovation and global R&D initiatives for the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, Türkiye Office. In this role, he works with a wide range of stakeholders, including multilateral institutions, energy industries, academic institutions, and research centers to address critical global challenges such as decarbonization, sustainability, and energy transition. Magsud has also served as the external relations director for the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline, which is part of the Southern Gas Corridor project, one of the world's largest energy megaprojects, connecting seven countries to transport Caspian gas to Europe.
He has previously held positions in government, multilateral institutions, and non-governmental organizations, including various roles at the United Nations, the United States Congress, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, and Global Crossroads in Tanzania.
Magsud holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Texas State University and a master's degree in energy policy and international political economy from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. He also holds a PhD degree in politics from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. He is currently a research associate at the Center for Contemporary Central Asia and the Caucasus.
His research as an AsiaGlobal Fellow will examine how China’s development of renewable energy technology, as well as its policy implementations and financial allocations, are reshaping its ties with Belt and Road Initiative partners, with a particular focus on Central Asia and the Caucasus.
